"Twittering" on Blog
My hubby is a bad daddy tonight. He forgot to pick Ethan up from the nursery after VBS =0( It's a good thing we only lived 3 blocks from the church.
Discovery of the Week
Oh no, it has begun. This morning I heard a sound coming from Ethan's room, like a soft THUMP, and then a jingling of the door knob. I jumped out of bed thinking, "Huh that's odd!" and hoping it's not what I'm thinking it is. As I opened Ethan's door, I found him standing right there trying to get out. He had somehow figured out how to climb out of his crib! So I picked him up and put him back into his crib and told him to show me how he got down. Of course he didn't. Now I can't help but be curious how he did it and will be watching him closely on the monitor. I better get the toddler bed ready to go here soon. And also figured out the logistics of how to keep a toddler on his bed and in his room...without destroying everything in it. Ha!

Just For Laughs
Last weekend when the Boscaljons were leaving our house, Dean (their son) waved to Kaika and said, "Bye horse!"
Since When...
- does Kaika will ONLY drink from his bowl if it's refilled with fresh water?
- does Ethan want to skip reading & singing and go straight to a nap by trying to climb into his crib?
- does Kaika lie down in someone else's yard during our walk and refuse to go any further?
- does Ethan copy EVERYTHING we say? New Word: hon-NEY! (what I say to Brian when I'm frustrated). Other favorite words: no, oh no, uh oh, aiyaiyai.
- does Kaika pace around the house waiting for us to go to bed so he could race downstairs to his kennel and go to bed?

Swim Lessons
Today was the first day of the two-week Parent-Tot swim class that I enrolled Ethan in. It's the same one we did last year which he loved, but this year he seemed to be a lot more fearful of the water. He screamed as soon as we enter the water. And continued to scream while we were in the water and clinged on to me for dear life. He doesn't really care to do the floating or kicking either. I wonder why since we've taken him to the pool several times. Maybe he's starting to understand the whole drowning factor and was scared. Or maybe he just needed to be distracted. I don't know, but I supposed I should lower my expectations or not have any at all and simply just enjoy the time with him. I must say though that he did loved playing with the toy rings in the shallow water and was on a mission to collect them all. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

Friends in Town
Brian's high school buddy, Andrew and his family came through town for the weekend and we had a great time catching up. It has been almost a year since I've last seen them and couldn't believe how big their kids have gotten. On Saturday, we took them on the Channel Cat and enjoyed a beautiful but hot day on the Mississippi River.

Eye Opener
Yesterday I had the opportunity to join Brian for the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center open house and see where he has been spending most of his days the past three months. It was a really neat experience and probably the best hospital I've ever been in! Even though everything "looked" great esthetically, the best part came at the end when we had a private tour of the mechanical rooms. That's where I actually got to see Brian's hard work and how his design of the HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, etc. makes the building run. Ah, it makes so much more sense now (not entirely but a lot more than before)!!!

Chilled water pumps

Steam & hot water piping above the ceiling
Not only was it an eye opener in the area of having a greater appreciation and pride for what Brian does, the Lord also brought a few other things to mind during my drive to Peoria:
Not only was it an eye opener in the area of having a greater appreciation and pride for what Brian does, the Lord also brought a few other things to mind during my drive to Peoria:
- putting myself in his shoes: starting the day at the crack of dawn, only to get in a car for a long 1-1/2 hour boring drive and spend a long day being busy the WHOLE time. Then get back in the car to come home only to do it again the next day. It's tiring to drive back and forth EVERY SINGLE DAY...so that led to (below)
- a conviction to have a more joyful/cheerful attitude when he walks through the door instead of instantly grumbles about my day while handing Ethan over
- being sensitive to his needs (even though he's almost always willing to put them aside)
Anyway all that aside, we enjoyed the rest of the evening downtown by the riverfront. Then came back to the hotel to swim and sit in hot tub. I don't remember the last time we got to do that alone. It was relaxing. Then this morning we had breakfast together before I dropped him off at the hospital (for another long day) and headed home. Brian's parents came and stayed the night with Ethan so I could go. Sounded like they had fun and Ethan even got treated to some Whitey's ice cream.

Proud to be an American
Originally I was planning our vacation so that we would be in SC over 4th of July (as to continue our family tradition). But it didn't work out so we ended up being home with nothing really planned. On Saturday we happened to drive by downtown and remembered that Davenport has their fireworks that night. So with Ethan's nap being super awesome that afternoon, we knew we could stay and enjoy at least part of it. (I know it's sad to have to base everything on his nap, but that's just the way it is).
Anyway last year in MN, he fell asleep in the stroller but it took FOR-EVER to get him there. So this year we weren't sure how he was going to do. It was either going to be a) freak out by the loud firework or b) awake and loving it...and praise the Lord he chose the latter. Luckily he was entertained enough by all the people and music prior to the big bang which kept him awake but content. Then when it was time, he just sat quietly in his stroller while watching the colorful sky. No crying, screaming, antsy-ness or anything. Do you realized how rare that was?! We actually got to stay and enjoy the whole thing...it was SO nice!!! Of course he fell asleep on the way home and then slept in for us the next morning =0)

Then on the 4th, we ended up going to Brian's co-worker's house to celebrate and pretty much had a repeat of the night before. Two nights of fireworks, it was a bang!!!

Myrtle Beach
Life has been pretty hectic lately hence the reason why I haven't posted anything in a while. We recently got back from a family vacation to Myrtle Beach and what an awesome place it was! Now in case you didn't know, this trip almost didn't happen because the week before we were supposed to leave the pilots decided to go on strike. But praise the Lord everything came together just in time!
Anyway after our Ft. Myers trip back in February, we decided to try something different and flew out of Chicago instead. We figured it was a direct flight and that way we don't have to mess with getting on and off the planes. But you know, you can plan so much and hope that everything would go smoothly but sometimes it just doesn't work out like you expected. Our flight was delayed for over an hour and Ethan held out as long as he could. But with only a quick cat nap in the car and lots of things to see at the airport, he was an overly tired, overstimulated kid who can't shut himself off. And when he gets to that point, it's NOT a good thing. The airport and airplane scenes were pretty stressful with lots of crying and screaming. Poor kid. Poor us. Never have I been so happy to get off that plane! Thankfully, the plane ride back went 100% better with an extra seat for him (see below). He even fell asleep in the car on the way home!

We weren't too stressed to actually get a first plane picture
As for our time there, it was great! We hit the beach first thing every morning and soaked up the sun. It was awesome swimming in the ocean again. Oh how I missed it! To our surprise though, Ethan didn't like it like he previously did. In fact, he was terrified and would scream each time the waves come crashing in. I guess the water wasn't as calm as Ft. Myers and I can see why it would be scary for him. So he just happily played with his sand toys and roamed the beach.

Relaxing on the lazy river at the resort
Brian's parents also came on the trip with us and watched Ethan a couple of nights so we could go out. Brian and I walked the shops along the boardwalk and enjoyed the rest of the night on the beach listening to music. It reminded us a lot of the summer we met in FL. Our last day there, all four of us rented jet skis and took turns going out on the waterway by our resort (while Ethan napped). It was my first time ever and I thought it was awesome! We'll definitely have to do that again. All in all, we had fun despite the teething and tantrums from the lil' guy. I think the heat might have gotten to him, too which didn't really help. Next vacation: we're going somewhere exotic and leaving Ethan with the grandparents ;0)
