Mamma Wisdom of the Week

A friend of mine sent me this article from simplemom.net which gave me the little boost that I much needed to find motivation at home. I've gotten over the "perfection" side of it, but now I just needed to be productive instead of roaming the house aimlessly feeling lost (while waiting for Ethan to wake up). This totally changed my perspectives and gave me some directions for this new job at home and how to manage it...daily!

1. Remember that it’s a job.
When someone asks where you work, don’t answer, “I don’t work; I stay at home.” Instead, answer, “I work at home.” When you manage your home, plan the meals, handle the finances, juggle the calendar, and make sure that family members enter the world relatively groomed and sanitized, you work a lot. Think of yourself as the COO of the home.

2. Start your day with a realistic morning routine.
Seasons in life call for flexibility, change, and not doing what you want all the time — but do your best to write down a weekday morning routine for starting your day. Whether it be working out, reading your Bible and journaling, going on a walk, or simply showering and getting dressed before the family wakes up, do what you can to prepare yourself for a day of work.

3. Eat your frog.
After your morning routine, attack that one thing you dread the most. Is it laundry? Start a load of wash right away, and make it your goal to get clean clothes in their closets by lunchtime. Do you need to pay the bills but can’t stand the work involved? Jump on it right away — the weight will be off your shoulders for the rest of the day once they’re paid.

4. Find inspiration…
Spend a few minutes reading blogs that encourage you in your job as home manager. Flip through some home magazines you enjoy to motivate you to clean up the clutter. Set a timer as you do this, so that you know when it’s time to actually put your found inspiration to work.

5. …But, don’t let those blogs and magazines discourage you.
It’s easy to throw in the towel before you even start your work when you read about other moms that seem to do everything, or look at glossy pages with gorgeous, stain-free furniture. If you’re a perfectionist, like me, you might especially be prone to not doing anything at all if you think you can’t do it expertly. If this is you, make a point to not open your laptop or a magazine until a certain chunk of your checklist is crossed off.

6. Leave the house.
Are you frozen with discouragement as you trip over the carpeting of Lego and stare at the pile of lunch dishes? Are your kids restless with energy, full of wiggles needing release? Get a change of scenery. Go to the park. Go on a walk. Sometimes fresh air will do all of you a world of good.

7. Evaluate what you’re about.
Perhaps you feel lazy about starting your work because you feel like you have so much to do, with no sign of completion. Are you trying to do too much? Is the goal of your job to have a sparkling house, spotless kids, and a three-course meal every evening? Are you losing the love of your game? Maybe it’s time to sit down and create a family mission statement. Decide who you are as a family. Let that be your guide for what you prioritize during your working hours.

8. End your work day.
It’s hard to see the end in sight, and there are sleepless nights peppered in our work weeks because of sick kiddos, nursing infants, or willful toddlers. But do what you can to end your work at a reasonable hour in order to spend time with your spouse, recharge your batteries with some adult (or alone) time, and get adequate rest for tomorrow.

"She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." (Proverbs 31:27)

Sick of Being Sick

In case some of you are wondering where I've disappeared to. Well, nowhere really...other than having had two different illnesses this past few weeks. A while back, Ethan was sick with a fever and rash and we thought it might be from teething. It turned out that he might have also gotten Roseola (a childhood virus) which apparently, I caught a mild case of. It was the weirdest thing because all of a sudden, I woke up with sore arms and legs like I've just done some vigorous exercises, except...I haven't. It had gotten so bad that I could barely move or walk, let alone carry around an infant! It kinda freaked me out so I decided to go to the doctor to see if they could figured out what was wrong with me. Anyway, she said that most likely I had caught Roseola from Ethan and have an adult reactions to it (mono-like symptoms). Okay, never had mono before but that would explain a lot as far as the strange achy muscles. Eventually I got over that to somehow come down with a cold a week or so later. Nice. So now I'm trying to get over that. Craziness I tell you! I've never been sick this many times in the past years combine as I have just this year alone. You would think I would have super duper immune system by now!

The time has come for me to take down Ethan's swing, which I was dreading for a while. It was such a handy piece of equipment for those needed hands-free moments and something we've used from day one. Ethan had always enjoyed it and I know I definitely got attached to it. Unfortunately, his weight is quickly approaching the limit that it has a hard time moving =0(. Luckily, I happened to remember the pack 'n play (which has only been used for traveling and naps on hot days) and brought it upstairs in place of the swing. I guess he didn't seem to like the confinement at first, but then quickly got use to having his own space to do whatever he pleased. I loaded it with toys and books which surprisingly kept him entertained for quite some time. I'm glad to now say that have a new place to put him "safely" while I eat or try to get dinner together.

Chillin' in his new "pad" while I vacuum

Hair Cut

No more stalling. No more postponing it. Ethan's hair was out of control and it was time. So I made an appointment and went in today. And since Brian had the day off, he wanted to help capture the moment and also be a part of the "1st."

BEFORE: shedding the rock band look

Ready to see the new look?

AFTER: adopting the preppy look

Ahh, isn't it crazy?! Doesn't he look totally different! Just so...grown up! I actually kinda freaked out once the hair lady was done 'cause I thought it was way too short. But after we got home and I looked at him a few dozen times, I guess I'm just so used to seeing a lot of hair and now it's gone. I do like it, but it'll definitely take some time getting use to!!! Brian says now that it's managable, he's excited to really have some fun with it! By the way, Ethan did so well at the salon and actually sat still for the most part!

Side note: I almost attempted to cut his hair myself...not that I really know how, but I figured it can't be that hard. Someone suggested learning from Youtube. Anyway, I'm glad I didn't because it definitely wouldn't have looked this good.

Growing Boy

We had Ethan's appointment today and got some new growth measurements:
Weight: 22 lb. 15 oz. (80th percentile)
Height: 29-1/4 in. (75th percentile)

Slowing down a little even though he'll now be moving into the convertible car seat! Anyway, Ethan also got a Polio shot while we're there and the nurse said something about making sure to keep his right leg moving today. I had to chuckle to myself thinking, "Oh that shouldn't be a problem." ;0)

Discovery of the Week

Ethan must have been feeling ambitious tonight because he decided to climb the 12 steps from the basement to upstairs! I couldn't believe it since he only made it to step #2 a few days ago. Other than spotting him to make sure he doesn't fall backwards, he pretty much did it all by himself (with a few rest stops in between). I was so excited I had to call Brian to tell him about it. When he got home we tried to make Ethan do it again, but of course by then he was too tired. I got a video of it from another time, here it is:

Fever & Rash

Wow, this has been a long weekend and by no means in a good way.

Friday morning, Ethan woke up with a fever of 100.4 degrees. Not having gone through this before, I panicked and was ready to take Ethan to the doctor's office. But after talking to the nurse over the phone, she said to just give him Tylenol and wait it out 2-3 days. I was like 2-3 days, he could be really ill by then?!? Praise the Lord, his fever broke through within 24 hours even though I could tell he was still in pain. Turned out it's pretty normal for teething to be accompanied with a fever (and other things) even though his bottom two and top two came through without any problems. Anyway, it was the weirdest thing to see him not being himself at all: like not having enough energy to roll over while I'm changing his diaper or actually letting me hold him until he falls asleep in my arms...it was kinda nice.

Side note: Kaika must have known something was wrong because he came and laid in our bedroom (since he couldn't get into Ethan's) which was something he hasn't done in forever. Then later on, he laid by my feet while I sat in the glider comforting Ethan. It touched my heart =0)

Last night was especially rough since I was left alone with a fussy baby while Brian had to help out with a youth event. Nothing I did seemed to comfort Ethan and I just felt super overwhelmed and completely exhausted! I called Brian to see if he could come home early and let's just say I was in tears by the time he walked through the door. Then around midnight, he woke up crying and couldn't go back to sleep. I think we pretty much lost count how many times we got up to comfort him. Poor kid. Poor us.

We woke up feeling like zombies and remembering that the last time this happened was when we first had Ethan. Along with the pain, Ethan also broke out with rash all over his body which I've never seen before. Again I called the nurse and she assured me that this is normal and nothing to panic about. I guess at least it doesn't bother him even though it looked to me like it's getting worse. Unfortunately, we had a repeat incident again at bed time tonight where he just stood in his crib and cried. Knowing how we both need our sleep in order to function tomorrow, I decided to hit him with all the dosage: teething tablet, Tylenol and teething jel. So far so good and I'm hoping this severe thunderstorm that is going through will pass so that I don't have to wake him up!

Tennis - Week #3

Now I'm finally done with tennis lessons and even though I liked being busy, I realized I don't like being this busy! Anyway, our week didn't start out so great as we got there early on Tuesday only to find out that Jenn had forgotten her racket at my house. So we quickly turned around and went back to get it, thinking that we'll probably be a few minutes late. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case as we ran into some road constructions and ended up showing up pretty late. By then our instructor had left and we felt really bad. Luckily, we were able to explain ourselves and apologized to her today which she said was no biggie. Since it was our last lesson, she worked us hard and at one point, we both had to bend over to catch our breaths. By the time I got home, all I wanted to do was take a long nap, which I did after a nice, big lunch and a shower! I told Brian that I felt like I had just ran a marathon and all he could do was laughed and said, "You have no idea!" Now I'm just excited to get to a tennis court and see what I could do with the new skills that I've learned. I must say the one thing that I've improved for sure is that I'm not hitting the balls out of the court anymore...at least not every single time!

Mamma Wisdom of the Week

As the standing-in-crib-and-not-going-to-sleep saga continued this week, I needed advice on what to do. I talked to a few people from the mom's group and they suggested that I wait it out because eventually he'll learn to sit down. So this afternoon when it was nap time, I tried it. Of course he pulled himself up again and then stood up with his kung fu grip to the rail and cried which I let him. I figured eventually he would get tired and let go but with his strong determination, he didn't. I did go in and help him down twice and the whole thing lasted about 45 minutes. Not quite sure how long this is going to last, but I've been praying for strength as this is starting to wear on me emotionally.

Anyway, I thought I was pretty good at the whole crying it out thing, but for some reason I found it harder this time around. Maybe the fact that it's a totally different situation - it's not that he can't go to sleep, but that he can't get down. Plus ever since he got a hold of the blinds and broke it, I've been constantly wondering what he's up to. But then today, I remembered we have a video monitor (that my parents got for us) and hooked it up. It went a lot better since I didn't have to constantly go into his room or peek through the slit in his door. Still, it was hard to hear him cry for help and wondering if/when he's going to stop.

p.s. More dilemma - now he's getting his calves stuck between the slates. Oh brother!

Did a load of whites this morning and forgot to put detergent. Wow. Hope that's not an indication of how the rest of my day is going to be.

Discovery of the Week

The past two mornings, I went into Ethan's room to find him STANDING in his crib waiting for me. Seeing that was kinda startled even though I knew he has been working on it for a while now. Unfortunately, this has turned into a dilemma at nap time and bed time because he would pull himself up but then can't get down. Wouldn't you say it's a little hard to sleep when you're standing up?! So I kept having to go into his room to help him down and somehow that got interpreted into "Oh it must be play time again!" Let's just say yesterday was a very trying day and it took about 2 hours before Ethan finally went down for his nap. I'm hoping today will go a lot better...Anyway, he must have also been bored while standing there because I saw some new chipped marks on his crib slates (which I can't think of anything else other than "teeth" marks). Yikes, what is this lil' guy doing in his crib?

Channel Cat

With the gorgeous summer weather we've been having, Jenn and I thought it would be fun to take Ethan and our hubbies on the Channel Cat Water Taxi for his first ride on the Mississippi River.

Loving the wind blowing on his face

It's a bird, it's a plane...

Brian's dad was here for the weekend to help with a home improvement project and Kaika wanted to be a part of it, too.
